Education

Education is a process of expediting learning, acquiring knowledge, values and virtue. It contributes to the development of better people around the globe. Education is the academic training that people acquire during life in order to acquire different skills that will help them excel. In my education I encountered several difficulties that affected me along the way. However, the use of the internet helped me learn beyond what they taught me in a classroom. Without studying, I wouldn’t have been where I am now, which is why it is important for me to talk about this topic. In this essay, first, I’ll talk about the importance of education; then, I’ll talk about why education is deficient in Guatemala; finally, I want to share the difficulties I had when studying in a public school.

Education is important to eradicate poverty and obtain higher development in any society. Education provides us with opportunities to improve our quality of life; that is why most parents make an effort for their children to study. However, many times we prefer to do things against a better education, for example when we prefer to waste time on social network or watching videos that don’t contribute to our development. I think education is important because it helps us develop different skills and have current knowledge. There is a saying that I really like “Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world” by Nelson Mandela. This sentence is true because it is up to each human being to educate themselves and move forward in order to change the world.

In Guatemala there are different public and private schools. However, they don’t have the same academic level because they don’t have the same opportunities. The government tries to show that they are doing many things for education, but the reality is different. In rural schools they still don’t have facilities, they don’t have computers and the teachers are poorly paid and don’t have the necessary resources to teach a class. In Guatemala there is a lack of decent work opportunities and it discourages education because when a person graduates they look for a job; he realizes all the requirements that companies ask for and still pay an unworthy salary. Most young people decide not to continue in the university and this is rooted in a bad salary.

In my case, my parents didn’t manage to finish their studies. I think they only reached basic education. That is why my parents did everything possible, so that my siblings and I could graduate and obtain a profession. When I started to study in public schools, I remember that they didn’t buy me books. We used the books that the Ministry of Education provided. The truth is that those books weren’t complete. We also didn’t have access to computers; I remember that when I entered the university, the Accounting course was very difficult for me and I realized that I received very few Accounting classes because in the public schools that I was in, there was no teacher for that course. I always believed in improving education, so I decided to pursue a career as a Primary Education Teacher after graduating. I realized that being a teacher is the lowest paid job in Guatemala. Now I have looked for a way to learn English and be able to get a better job, which can help me pay for my education. However, I believe that education in Guatemala can change when the government stops investing in weapons and they worry more about providing quality education.

In summary, education is important to be able to eradicate ignorance and to be able to overcome the limitations that the government places on us. I think that each person has the power to choose to improve or settle for what they have and not except anything from the government. There are several education scholarships; that out of ignorance people don’t take them. We have to educate ourselves and prepare ourselves to opt for a better opportunity. Education helps the economy in each country grow by generating employment and training entrepreneurs.
